To control the foam formation in tank-type washing machines, in particular disinfectant dishwashers, the water pressure of the water circulated by a circulating pump (11) is determined by a pressure sensor (22) or by power measurement (22') of the power consumed by the circulating pump (11). The temperature ( theta ) of the circulated water is furthermore measured by a temperature sensor (14). If the measured pressure (P1) falls below a specified pressure value and if the measured temperature ( theta ) is above a specified value at the same time, the heating power is reduced. If, on the other hand, the measured temperature is below the specified value during this pressure drop, a feed pump (20) for defoaming agent is activated by means of a control logic (24). The pressure built up in the pressure line (21) of the feed pump (20) is also measured by a pressure sensor (23) to monitor whether the feed pump (20) is pumping correctly. Preferably, an obstacle to flow, for example in the form of a metering orifice or pipe narrowing is fitted downstream of the pressure sensors (22, 23). <IMAGE>
