In a gas-cooled nuclear reactor, the fuel rods are mounted in pressure tubes surrounded by heavy water moderator. The pressure tubes are resiliently mounted to permit linear dimension charges relative to the moderator container. The tubes extend through and are welded to the end surfaces of the container. The end surfaces are sealed to the container side walls by flexible stainless steel membranes which permit relative displacement between the end surfaces and side walls due to pressure tube length charges. The flexible membrane may be formed from a single sheet or from several sheets, the spaces between which contain an incompressible fluid. In the embodiments described the container ends are hollow and carry coolant water. |
