A liquid crystal display device having a liquid crystal arrangement in negative contrast is proposed, which is used to display information. The liquid crystal arrangement is illuminated from behind by an illuminating device. The liquid crystal display is likewise illuminated frontly or obliquely from above, preferably by means of a light pipe. As a result, the interfering translucency in conjunction with interference colours is avoided in the case of low ambient brightness.
