A bearing or bushing is made of a material consisting of a layer of a matrix of polyimide in which are dispersed cavities having diameters of 0À01 to 0À25 inch which are completely filled with a mixture of PTFE and particulate bearing metal. The bearing metal may be lead, zinc, tin, gallium, cadmium, or indium, or alloys of the last four metals. The filler is preferably 50% by weight PTFE and 50% lead. The bearing may have a coating of the mixture, or the surface may consist of 10 to 40% of the mixtures. The bearing is made by bonding a polyimide matrix to a metal substrate, forming indentations in the matrix, applying a slurry of polyimide liquid binder composed of PTFE and the bearing metal and curing the composite.</p> |
