Road-surfacing composition consists of a mixt. of (I) gravel, (II) sand, (III) bituminous binders, and (IV) a multicomponent filler which increases the viscosity of the mastic formed from the filler and the bituminous binder. The wt. proportions of (I), (II) and (III) in the compn. are about the same as those in pouring asphalt or asphalt cement, while the wt. proportion of (IV) is reduced to a low value. The compn. pref. contains 10-15% wt. (IV). The component of (IV) increasing the viscosity of the mastic is pref. a clay treated with an organic wetting agent, or asbestos fibres, glass fibres, or mineral fibres, or of a long chain polymer, pref. unvulcanised rubber or a plastic material. The composition gives road-surfaces which are as tough and impact resistant as asphalt road surfaces, and as hard and economical as concrete road-surfaces.
|
