Dialkyl Zn cpds. prepared by reacting an alloy of Zn with at least one of K, Na or Li with alkyl bromide or iodide under reflux, in the absence of moisture at 100 - 140 degrees C at normal or elevated pressure. The refluxed mixture is distilled under reduced press. to remove the volatile dialkyl Zn cpd. Reaction normally proceeds in an N2 atmosphere. The reaction is spontaneous and does not suffer from extreme sensitivity to temp. as occurs with Cn-Zn alloys.
