A shift-control lever 24 for the PRND21 manual range selector valve (not shown) of an automatic transmission on a motor-vehicle, is pivotally mounted at 38 and incorporates a spring pawl 64 one end 70 of which extends transversely therefrom into registry with ratchet teeth 48-58 (Fig. 4), corresponding to the various rough selector positions, formed on the arcuate periphery of an adjacent fixed gate plate 46, movement of the shift lever 24 around the ratchet toothed positions being effected by raising the spring pawl end 70, out of registry with the ratchet teeth, by a flexible strap 78 connected at 80 to a hand-operated twist-grip pivotally mounted on a pin 76 at the upper end of the shift lever 24. In the centre position of the gate, the shift lever 24 is freely movable between the N and D positions, movement into the R or P and 2 or 1 positions being effected by manually raising the spring pawl end 70 by the twist-grip 74 to clear the ratchet teeth as stated above. Movement from the P (park) position can again only be effected by manually raising the spring pawl via the twist-grip, but movement from the R, or, the 1 or 2 positions back to the central N and D position is simply effected by pulling back the shift lever, the spring pawl ratcheting over the teeth 48, 56 or 50 respectively. A transparent arcuate plate or lens 28, mounted in a cover 20, has the PRND21 positions indicated thereon, a position indicating lamp 32, carried by the shift lever 24, directing a light beam on the lens to selectively illuminate the indicated position. |
