PURPOSE:To read an original over the specified size without missing by changing over the 1st mode reading picture information while the original is moved and the 2nd mode reading the original at standstill optionally. CONSTITUTION:A start signal and an MODE signal are set at first to move a read optical system to a point (a) and start a compression processing circuit 47, a picture buffer memory 48 and a picture data transmission circuit 50. Then the reading with the original moved is started after a picture tip signal is set, and whether or not the end of the transmitted original comes is discriminated while processings such as compression, storage to a buffer memory and execution of picture data transmission are executed sequentially. If an overflow takes place, the reading of the original while moving is finished to erase the picture data at generation of overflow to stop the original to a point (b). When the original stops at the point (b), the reading of still original is started.
