PURPOSE:To enable a high-speed contour sampling by obtaining analytically the parameters of the equation that describes the contour to be sampled. CONSTITUTION:An input image from an input part 1 is digitized, and the differentiation values in X and Y direction 2 and 3 are calculated 2, 3, and supplied to an edge detector 4, and thus, the probable dots to form the contour (X1, Y1)-(Xn,Yn) are detected. And, by parameter deciding means 9-12, and based on the probable dots, the values (a), (h), (b), (c), (dl) that make the equation I to give the smallest value, are obtained. By the decided parameters (a), (h), (b), (c), (d), the aX<2>+hxy+bY<2>+cX+dY+1=0 is outputted from an calculation part 13.
