PURPOSE:The titled copolymer which has excellent compatibility with polyphenylene ether and improves its impact resistance, comprising ethylene, a specified ethylenically unsaturated ester and itaconic anhydride. CONSTITUTION:A solution formed by dissolving 1-30wt% itaconic anhydride in 5-50wt% ethylenically unsaturated ester of the formula (wherein R1 is H or CH3, R2 is OCOR3 or COOR4 and R3 and R4 are each a 1-18C alkyl) so that the total amount may be 10-30wt% is mixed with 20-94wt% ethylene. To this solution a solvent (e.g., hexane) in which a catalyst (e.g., t-butyl peroxypivalate) is dissolved at a concentration of 0.5-30wt% and a chain transfer agent (e.g., propylene) are added. The resulting solution is radical- polymerized at a polymerization pressure >=500kg/cm<2>, preferably, 1,000-4,000kg/cm<2> and a polymerization temperature >=120 deg.C, preferably, 150-300 deg.C to obtain an ethylene copolymer of a MFR of 0.01-1,000g/10min.
