PURPOSE:To develop optical tape cores coated with a metal having improved low-temperature characteristics, mechanical strength, and heat resistance, by arranging plural optical fiber cores with metal coated layers in parallel on the same plane, melting and integrating them, forming a metal protecting layer on the surface. CONSTITUTION:The plural optical fiber cores 1 having metal covering layers at least the outermost layers are passed through the arranging dies 2, so that the neighboring optical fiber cores are arranged in parallel on the same plane. The plural optical fiber cores 1 are passed through the arc discharge device 3 and melted and integrated. The integrated cores are sent to the furnace 4, heated at 400-1,000 deg.C depending upon the kind of metal powder 5 to be used in the following process, fed to the metal powder bath 6 where an inert gas such as N2, etc. is blown upon the metal fine powder such as Al, Cu, etc., to coat the surface of the integrated core with the metal fine powder. Then, the integrated cores are passed through the melting furnace 9, the coated metal fine powder is melted, to produce optical tape cores with uniform metal protected coated in a tape form.
