PURPOSE:To simplify the preparation of a catalyst, by molding a mixture prepared by compounding colloidal silica with a ceramic raw powder in a predetermined shape and impregnating the molded one with a solution containing a metal element being a catalytic component before sintering the same at 800 deg.C or more. CONSTITUTION:As a ceramic raw powder, an alumina type ceramic material having an average particle size of about 3mum and consisting of 70wt% of Al2O3 and 30wt% of SiO2 is used and about 7wt% of an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution with concn. of about 5wt% and about 5wt% of an about 20wt% aqueous dispersion of colloidal silica manufactured by Nissan Chemical Industries, Ltd. are added to said ceramic material. The resulting composition is mixed by using a grinding impregnator and passed through a 40-mesh screen and molded under pressure of about 1t/cm<2> by using a mold with a dimension of 50X30mm. The molded one is dried at about 105 deg.C for about 2hr and subsequently impregnated with an ethyl alcohol solution containing about 5wt% of platinic chloride while the impregnated one is again dried at about 105 deg.C, sintered and baked at about 900 deg.C for about 2hr in an electric furnace in the presence of air.
