PURPOSE:To effectively liquefy coal at a high liquefaction rate by using as a coal liquefaction solvent a mixture comprising an adjusted proportion of five components obtd. by distilling a coal liquefaction product. CONSTITUTION:A product obtd. by liquefying coal is fractionated into five components, i.e. a component boiling at 200 deg.C or lower temp., a component boiling at 200-350 deg.C, a component boiling at 350-450 deg.C, a component boiling at 450-540 deg.C and a component boiling at 540 deg.C or above. A hydrogenation product obtd. by hydrotreating said 200-350 deg.C component at 300-350 deg.C in a fixed-bed reactor, etc. filled with a catalyst such as a Ni/Mo-base catalyst is entirely or partially mixed with the total or part of the 450-540 deg.C component, and the resulting mixture is used as a coal liquefaction solvent. On the other hand, after the 350-450 deg.C component is fractionated into a paraffin-rich compo nent and a paraffin-poor component by solvent extraction, column chromato graphy, etc., the latter is also used entirely or partially as a part of the coal liquefaction solvent, to liquefy coal.
