PURPOSE:To form an economical and small-sized optical shutter by holding an optically anisotropic substance, e.g. liquid crystal and PLZT ceramics, having transparent electrodes on both the sides between two polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION:The optical shutter is constituted of an optical fiber 1 on the input side, a polarizing plate 2, an optically anisotropic substance 11, a polarizing plate 4, an optical fiber 5 on the output side, and a housing 12. The transparent electrodes 13, 14 are formed on both the sides of the substance 11 and a DC power supplie 16 is connected to the electrodes 13, 14 through a switch 15. The substance 11 has properties for passing incident light as it is or rotating a voltage applied to the transparent electrodes 13, 14 formed on both the side. When the light passing through the substance 11 coincides with the polarizing direction of the polarizing plate 4, the light is outputted to the optical fiber 5, but when the light is inconsistent with the polarizing direction, the light 9 is not outputted to the optical fiber 5.
