Filled and corked wine bottles to be cleaned after storage ready for labelling and capsuling are advanced by a conveyor (3) through a washing machine then a drying machine. Inside the drying machine, the bottles (4) are pushed sideways as they pass a drying nozzle (8) so that they rest partly on a low friction strip and the conveyor, where there is left an air gap. The sideways movement is produced by a pair of guide rods (5) in contact with the bottles about half way up. The drying nozzle is shaped to form a discharge slot about 1 m long and 1 cm wide. It slopes downwards at an angle to the horizontal so that air is directed higher up on entry and near the bottom as the bottles leave.
