The transducer comprises a spherical coil 22 formed of a wire of magnetostrictive material 26 around which an insulated electrically conducting wire is wound, the ends of the said insulated conducting wire serving, during transmission, to apply an AC voltage signal which is converted into a corresponding elastic wave; an AC voltage signal corresponding to the received elastic wave appearing, on reception, between the said ends. Applications to the transmission of high-frequency elastic waves in water (hydrophone) and to high-fidelity sound reproduction in air. <IMAGE>
