A heat treatment process for fine grained material, esp. for cement prodn., involves preheating in a preheater, further heating in a pre-calcination zone with addn. of additional fuel, finish firing in a rotary kiln and cooling in a cooler, the cooling air stream withdrawn from the cooler being split into at least two sub-streams into which two sub-streams of the preheated material are fed, forming two gas/solids sub-streams supplied from opposite sides into the kiln off-gas line which forms the precalcination zone and which connects the kiln with the preheater. - The novelty is that, prior to entry into the kiln off-gas, both cooling air sub-streams are provided with opposed spiral motions of direction selected so that they have downwardly directed velocity components in the kiln off-gas line cross-sectional region in which the kiln off-gases have their greatest upwardly directed velocity. A plant for carrying out the process is also claimed.
