Prodn. of monoacyl alkylene polyamines of formula RCONH(XNH)nH (I) is effected by reacting a polyalkylene polyamine of formula H2N(XNH)nH (II) with a fatty acid ester of formula R1COOR2 (III) in the presence of a hydroxylic solvent. R1 = 7-21C alkyl; n = 1-3; X = 2-6C alkylene or hydroxyalkylene; R2 = 1-3C alkyl. - The reaction is effected at 40-50 deg.C in the presence of 5-40wt.% solvent, esp. MeOH, EtOH or i-PrOH. The (II):(III) ratio is 5-25:1, esp. 10-20:1.
