The hybrid transmission has a battery driven electric motor as well as an engine powered generator for fuel-electric drive. A simple speed control is set at a selected level above which setting the battery drive is disconnected and the engine started. The recharging of the battery takes place at the higher speeds. Below the set level the vehicle is driven on the battery. The system provides automatic control to prevent fume pollution in city centres, where speeds are low. It also provides an automatic fume control in traffic stopages. The level of charge in the battery is monitored so that the engine can be started automatically when the charge is low, even if travelling at low speeds. |
