A washing machine comprises an agitator, reversible actuating means for oscillating the agitator, and spring means exciting a torsional restoring force during oscillatory displacement of the agitator from its nominal rest position. As shown, the stator 47 of an electric motor journals a rotor 51 rigid with a vertical shaft 25 fixed to an agitator (35). A hollow shaft 23, journalled on shaft 25, is fixed to a perforated clothes drum (31) located within a fixed tub (11). Oppositely-wound torsion springs 69, 71 have their respective inner ends rigid with shaft 23, and oppositely-hooked respective outer ends 89, 91 are disposed on either side of a vertical pin 57 rigid with shaft 26. The motor operates to oscillate the agitator during a washing phase, when pin 57 alternately engages the ends 89, 91 for stressing the springs which thereby exert a restoring couple on the motor. During the spin drying phase, rotor 51 rotates continuously and shaft 23 is coupled thereto by one of the springs. The drum may be either free or positively restrained from rotation during the washing phase. In a modification, tension springs replace the torsion springs. |
