Oxetane derivatives of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP>, which may be the same or different, are each hydrogen or an optionally substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkoxycarbonyl, cycloalkyl, aryl or heterocyclic radical, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> together with the carbon atom to which they are attached, represent a carbocyclic or heterocyclic ring optionally comprising an N- alkyl or N-benzyl group, and R<SP>3</SP> represents an optionally substituted (where any substituent is not an amine or -NH- alkyl group) alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or heterocyclic radical, are prepared by reacting a carbonyl compound of formula R<SP>1</SP>COR<SP>2</SP> with an isonitrile of formula R<SP>3</SP>-NC, in the presence of a strong anhydrous Friedel-Crafts acid catalyst, and neutralizing the reaction product. The reaction is preferably carried out with stoichiometric quantities of reactants at a temperature from - 20‹ to + 100‹ C. |
