In a self-locking belt blocking device, especially for motor vehicle safety belts, having a belt winding shaft which is mounted in a casing and a blocking element which is eccentrically mounted on one end of the shaft, which blocking element is made by a deflection controlled by a belt band-sensitive and/or vehicle-sensitive blocking system to engage with a thrust ring which is situated on the casing and has internal toothing and then blocks further rotation of the belt winding shaft, the problem is that the blocking action of the belt blocking device cannot be released under load after an accident when such a belt blocking device is used in passive safety belt systems. To remedy this problem, it is proposed that the thrust ring be designed as a coupling ring (15) which is rotatably mounted on the casing (11) and has an external toothing (23) and be fixed in its position via a releasable locking device (21) when the belt blocking device (10) is in its operating position.
