PURPOSE:To obtain a high purity carbonaceous material by putting a carbonaceous material in a container made of graphite having specified properties and by treating the material with gaseous halogen at a high temp. CONSTITUTION:Natural flake graphite consisting of grown crystals or easily graphitizable petroleum pitch coke is kneaded with a binder such as tar pitch and ground to powder. This powder is press-molded to the desired shape, and the molded body is baked and graphitized to form a graphite container of >=10mm thickness for refining a carbonaceous material. The container is made of graphite having >=2.15 true specific gravity and >=1.75 apparent specific gravity. A carbonaceous material to be treated is put in the graphite container and refined in an atmosphere of gaseous halogen at about 2,600 deg.C. Since the container is permeable to gaseous halogen and halides of impurity elements at about 2,600 deg.C high temp. but is impermeable to them at <=about 2,000 deg.C low temp., impurities released from the carbonaceous material through the container do not diffuse and penetrate into the container during cooling, so a high purity carbonaceous material is obtd. |
