The invention relates to a method for punching labels or the like out of stacks of sheetlike material, especially paper, using a punching tool, e.g. in a bridge plate punching machine, which method permits perfect successive punching out of labels or the like from stacks of sheetlike material, and to an apparatus for implementing such a method. Provision is made in the method for the sheets of the stack to be mechanically smoothed back to their original flat position after each individual punching action or after a plurality of punching actions. The punching machine provided for this is characterised in that at least one roller or similar smoothing-out apparatus is arranged above the stack of sheets outside the punching region, which roller or smoothing-out device can be lowered onto the stack of sheets after each punching action or after a plurality of punching actions, after which the stack of sheets can be moved under the roller or similar smoothing-out device, with smoothing of the bulging which arises during punching.
