Visual display unit controllers are known which contain colour tables which, when addressed with attribute signals from the image memory, emit colour codes for forming video signals. According to the present invention, at least on flashing code (which is converted into a flashing clock with a plurality of flashing phases) and one colour code per flashing phase, as well as the attribute signal, are stored in a computer (SGR) in order to flash image parts, which attribute signal is contained in those image-memory cells which are allocated to the pixels which are intended to flash with the flashing clock in the colours which are designated by the colour codes. At the start of each flashing phase of each flashing clock, the computer (SGR) loads the colour code associated with this flashing phase into the colour table (FT) having the attribute signal as address.
