[Also in Division B8] The permanent magnets 2 on a conveyance 8 and a trackway 7 in a magnetic suspension transportation system as described in Specifications 867,045 and 1,035,764, are arranged in a single line in a mild steel channel 1, are wedged in place by wooden strips 3, and are covered with an aluminium strip 6, so as to form a magnetic rail 11, which is used with others (as shown in Fig. 2) to support a suspended coach 8 or (as in a further embodiment) to support articulated platforms above a trackway, to form a moving roadway. The magnets 2 are of oriented barium or strontium ferrite. In Fig. 2, the guide surfaces 16 may be aluminium alloy or formed by rails 11. The outer edges of arms 12 and 13 are fitted with friction material or with brakes for normal braking The coach 8 is driven by a linear induction motor 17 or by trackway-engaging rubber pulleys driven from D.C. motors at variable speed. In the further embodiment, the moving roadway is driven continuously at a fixed speed by a series of spaced 3-phase motors driving the platforms through rubber rollers 22. The moving roadway is installed above normal roads, and access thereto by wheeled vehicles and pedestrians is by moving conveyer belts. |
