Gas, especially air, from is compressor is passed to inlet 210 of the drier and passes down annular space 216, and thence up through oil separator 232, which comprises for example a filter sheet between foraminous members, and through desiccant 208 held between filter pads 234, 236, e.g. of polyurethane foam, pad 236 maintaining the desiccant under compression through the agency of spring 268. The dry effluent gas passes through check valve 260, which is provided with a reverse bleed aperture 254 in closure member 252, enabling the flow of gas through the valve to be controlled, and enters plenum 242, passing thence through outlet 202 and check valve 206 to storage tank 28'. Periodically the compressor is stopped and the oil separator 232 is cleared by opening exhaust valve 212, causing an explosive outrush of air from plenum 238, desiccant chamber 208 and space 286 and forcing oil out through the valve 212. Thereafter, regenerant is passed through the desiccant 208 and out through aperture 254 until the desiccant is fully regenerated. The comprssion cycle is then recommenced.
