A carbon base textile which retains the physical characteristics of the starting material is made by treating a textile containing at least 85% by wt. polyacrylonitrile and at least 57.5% by wt. C with an 0-containing compound of a transition metal for a sufficient time to convert it to an essentially thermoset non-fusible product, which is then carbonized above 700‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. In examples a fabric of homopolyacrylonitrile is treated with alkaline RMnO 4 , acid K 2 Cr 2 O 7 ; or the vapour of CrO 2 Cl 2 . Carbonization is by heating at 60‹ C./min. to 1000‹ C. followed by 1 hour at 1000‹ C.
