Prepn. of morpholine cpds. and aminoethoxy-ethanol cpds. - by catalytic reaction of oxy-di:alkanol cpds. with ammonia

Simultaneous prepn. of morpholines (I) and 2-(2-aminoethoxy)ethanols (II) comprises reacting an oxydialkanol of formula (III): HO-CHR'-CRR"-O-CRR'-CHR"-OH (III) (where R, R' and R" are H or alkyl) with NH3 in presence of a catalyst comprising Cu, Ni, Cr, Co, Mn, Mo, Pd, Pt, Rh and/or their oxides. The reaction is effected at a temp. of 190-230 degrees C and a pressure sufficient to maintain the reactants in the liq. phase (up to 124 bars, pref. 48-124 bars). 2-(2-Aminoethoxy)ethanol (IIa) is used to treat natural gas. Process employs lower pressures than prior art processes and gives higher yields of (II) without significant loss of (I) yield. The proportions of (I) and (II) in the product can be adjusted by varying the temp. and pressure.
