PURPOSE:To provide a piston ring which is excellent in wear-resistance, by employing nitrogen gas as a reaction gas, and iron as a vapor material so that a coating layer having a specific thickness and made of iron nitride is formed on the sliding surface of the piston ring. CONSTITUTION:By utilizing a reactive ion plating method in which a vapor material is evaporated in an atmosphere including a reaction gas to form a coating layer made of a reaction product between the reaction gas and the vapor material, a coating layer 11 having a thickness of 10-50mum and made of iron nitride on the slide surface of a piston ring 9, employing nitrogen gas as a reaction and iron as a vapor material. |
