A table assembly for positioning and supporting a metal sheet in a machine tool such as a turret punch press 22 includes a U-shaped carriage 56 comprising a transverse beam 63 and attached longitudinal beams 64, 65. Blocks 55 riding via ball bearings on parallel shafts 46 and 48 are fixed to the beams 64, 65 of the carriage, whilst a nut follower (66) (Fig. 6, not shown) is attached to transverse beam 63 and threadedly engaged with a thread screw 57 which is rotated by an hydraulic motor 60 to move the carriage towards or away from the punch press 22. The metal sheet is located by an end locator 84, Fig. 2, and held by hydraulically operated work-holders 82, 83 mounted on a cross slide 76 which is driven laterally of the punch press 22 by an hydraulic motor 81 in a similar manner to the carriage 56. The sheet is supported by tubular rollers 88 extending between table surfaces 86 and 87 which are fixed to the longitudinal beams 64 and 65. The drive motors 60 and 81 may be automatically controlled. |
