[Also in Divisions G5 and H1] A matrix of individual gaseous discharge cells 16 actuated by a selection matrix of crossing electrodes 12, to form a visual display, is characterized in that there is no direct electrical contact between the electrodes 12 and the gas in the cell. Thus an ignited cell is prevented from inhibiting firing of another cell on the same drive electrode. As described, holes 16 in a glass plate 14 are filled with a 95: 5 Ne/He, mixture. Plate 14 is sandwiched between thin glass plates 18 (which act as dielectrics), and the latter are bonded to supporting glass plates 10 by an epoxy resin. X and Y electrodes 12 are deposited on plates 10; they may be thin films of gold; or of tin oxide 12A reverse-etched to the desired pattern and covered by a thicker layer of beryllium copper having light-transmitting holes 50, 52, Fig. 4. Cell ignition reliability is promoted by means of a thermionic or other electrode (60) passing through the cells (Fig. 6, not shown); or by including a photo-emissive substance (e.g. sodium) in the glass of plate 14 and subjecting the entire display to backlighting from a filtered nitrogen lamp source (90), Fig. 7 (not shown). |
