This invention is a regenerable process for producing gaseous hydrogen sulfide in concentrated form from sulfur dioxide obtained from a dilute gas source by (1) reacting the SO2 with a concentrated solution of Na2SO3 to form Na2S2O5 in solution and then either: (2) reacting the Na2S2O5 with Na2CO3 to form solid Na2SO3, a concentrated solution of Na2SO3 which is recycled to the SO2 reaction and concentrated gaseous CO3 which is used in a subsequent step, (3) reducing the Na2SO3 to Na2S, (4) reacting the Na2S with solid NaHCO3 to form gaseous H2S and Na2CO3, (5) recycling part of the Na2CO3 to (2) above and reacting the remainder with concentrated CO2 from (2) above to form solid NaHCO3 and recycling the solid NaHCO3 to (4) above, or; (2) reacting the Na2S2O5 with NaHCO3 to form solid Na2SO3, a concentrated solution of Na2SO3 which is recycled to the SO2 reaction, and concentrated, gaseous CO2 which is used in a subsequent step, (3A) reducing the Na2SO3 to Na2S, (4A) reacting the Na2S in solution with water and gaseous CO2 from (2A) above to form gaseous H2S and solid NaHCO3 and (5A) recycling the solid NaHCO3 to (2A) above.
