PURPOSE:To make possible continuous casting operation without generating cold shut in a billet by supplying electric power between an electrode immersed in the molten metal in a tundish and mold to heat the molten metal flowing into the mold. CONSTITUTION:The electrode 52 which is constituted preferably coolably is immersed in the molten steel 34 and electric current is passed between said electrode 52 and the mold 38 from an electric power source 60, in a continuous casting device 30 consisting in heating and holding the molten steel 34 poured and stored in the space 33 of the tundish 31 having a refractory roll 32 to and at a prescribed temp. by an induction heating coil 35, admitting the molten steel 34 through a hole 37a into the water cooled mold 38 connecting to a tundish nozzle 37 in the bottom 36 to form a solidified shell A1 in a molding cylinder 39 of the mold 38 and drawing the shell as the billet 49 by means of pinch rolls 48. Then the molten steel 34 passing through the narrow hole part 37a is heated by Joule heat, by which the solidified shell A1 in which curve of the interface between the solidified shell A1 and the molten steel 34 is sloped gently is formed. The generation of the cold shut, crack, etc. is thus prevented and the production of the small-sized billet is made possible. |
