<p>PURPOSE:To enable uniform orientation of liquid crystals in a large area and even image display in high contrast by using specified cholesteric liquid crystals as an orienting film, and a liquid crystal layer exhibiting a cholesteric phase having spiral structure. CONSTITUTION:The soln. of the cholesteric liquid crystals represented by the formula, R being 1-18C alkyl, is applied to the surfaces of the glass bases 11, 12 provided with transparent electrodes 13, 14, and then dried to form liquid crystal panels formed by the orienting film 16, 17. A nematic-cholesteric phase- transition type accumulation type liquid crystal compsn. 15 is sealed in between the bases 11, 12 to obtain the liquid crystal cell. The use of the films 13, 14 affinitive to the compsn. 15 permits the vertical orientation of the compsn. 15 to be carried out in a large area without unevenness, and therefore, the liquid crystal display device high in contrast ratio and stabilized in action in an area as large as several hundred cm<2> to be obtained.</p> |
