The invention relates to a multispeed gear hub for bicycles or the like, having a gear shift in which a planetary gear can be engaged by means of a locking catch system, and the shifting of the locking catches being capable of being controlled by axial displacement of at least one coaxial component via a shifting block, such that the axially displaceable component is constructed as a shifting ring and is elastically coupled to the shifting block and such that, as a result, the driver can alternately be coupled either to an axially securing coaxial planetary wheel carrier or to the associated hollow wheel which is arranged so as to be axially displaceable counter to spring stressing. By means of this design, a multispeed gear hub for more than three speeds and having a back-pedalling brake device is obtained. The gear shift is carried out here with a single shift element from one side of the hub axle. The back-pedalling brake acts independently of the respective shift position of the hub gear with unchanged braking force (Fig. 1). <IMAGE>
