In an apparatus for removing nitrogen oxides from an exhaust gas containing these gases, in particular a flue gas from a furnace, having an exhaust gas pipe and a catalyst arranged in the exhaust gas pipe and built of a multiplicity of catalyst elements (15), to construct a flow distribution favouring the catalysis without too high a pressure drop, it is provided that the catalyst is composed of a multiplicity of rod-like catalyst elements (15) spaced apart and around which the exhaust gas flows, which essentially extend transversely to the direction of flow of the exhaust gas stream. In this case, the catalyst elements preferably extend through the exhaust gas pipe from wall to wall or, in the case of large exhaust gas pipe cross-sections, are shorter than the principal dimensions of the exhaust gas pipe and a plurality of the catalyst elements (15) in each case by means of a support construction (16) are combined to form a module (17) and a multiplicity of these modules (17) are arranged in the exhaust gas pipe.
