In the process, first of all two profile parts are arranged opposite each other and at a spacing from each other, and two plastic insulating webs are introduced into the profile parts in such a manner that the latter are connected to each other. A closed cavity remains between the profile parts and the insulating webs. In order to reduce the heat transfer in this cavity from one profile part to the other, a plastic strand is inserted into the cavity in such a manner that it bears against the insulating webs and divides the cavity into at least two chambers. Subsequently, the inserted strand can be heated to such a temperature that it is converted into foamed plastic and fills at least a large part of the cavity. The strand can further be coated with an adhesive which is activated by the effect of heat.
