An intake chamber is provided for the air or fuel mixture intake and compression strokes and a working chamber with rotary pistons rotating in it for expansion and exhausting of the combustion gases. Both rotary pistons seated on a common engine shaft have an outer circumference such that piston circumference and piston chamber - in the intake chamber together with a slide valve - form variable working chambers during the piston rotation. The different piston chambers are connected to one another by way of a combustion chamber which can be closed off from both chambers in the proposed cycle. The firing point and point of complete lifting off of the free end of the swivel valve bearing on the outer circumference of the working piston during the rotation of the latter from a graduation provided in the closing position in the combustion chamber wall, which graduation is filled when lift-off occurs under spring pressure by a seal, are matched to one another. For air scavenging of the working chamber when fuel is injected into the compressed air, both rotary piston positions in relation to the precise adjustment for the start of compression and closure of the combustion chamber by the swivel valve are phase-offset against one another by a few degrees.
