Memory-programmable controller with a central control mechanism (3) and a program memory (4), with a system for transmitting the input/output signals between the central control mechanism (3) and an input/output station (5) disposed remotely from the central control mechanism which has input/output terminals for the parallel connection of alarm and/or actuating components (6, 7) according to the number of inputs/outputs of the memory-programmable controller, as well as input/output registers (9) to transmit the input/output signals and which is connected via a serial data line (8) to the central control mechanism. In order to be able to carry out fault monitoring of the alarm and/or actuating components (6, 7) independently of the central control mechanism (3), the input/output station (5) has a monitoring device (12, 13) with a clock generator (12) and an actuation simulation analyser (13) and each alarm and/or actuating component (6, 7) has an actuation simulator with which each connected alarm and actuating component (6, 7) is activated at regular intervals and an actuation cycle is thus automatically simulated, a fault message is sent via the data line (8) to the central control mechanism (3) only if the actuation cycle concerned is not over. In this way, the process fault occurring due to a malfunction in the controller peripherals can be detected even before any damage is caused. <IMAGE>
