A shearing apparatus, particularly a punch press, comprises a tool slide 4 releasably coupled to a driving ram 7 by engagement of a nose 17, on a pawl 16 pivoted to the ram, with an abutment 14 on the slide. A pin 18 on the pawl is slidably engaged in a slot 19 in a cranked lever 20 pivoted to the slide at 23 and urged by spring 21a into the position shown. A fixed fluid jack 25 has its piston 24 resting on the arm 22 of the lever. To uncouple the punch slide 4 from the ram to enable the punch St to be moved almost into contact with a workpiece G for alignment purposes, the piston 24 is extended which first pivots the cranked lever 20 about pivot 23 until it abuts a stop 201 on the slide, this movement causing the pawl nose 17 to be disengaged from the abutment 14. Further extension of the piston 24 moves the slide downwards against the action of springs 11 anchored at their upper ends 11a to the press frame. The piston 24 is actuated via a cylinder 26 by moving a lever 29 in the direction K. With the punch in position adjacent the stock, pressure on a pin 30 in the direction S actuates the ram 7, a rounded portion 6 of which engages in a complementary recess 5 in the slide 4 and forces the punch St through the stock. The lever 20 having been moved away from the stop 201 by the spring 21a, the pawl nose 17 re-engages under the abutment 14 on the slide and carries the slide and punch up with it to the position shown. The punch may be replaced by a shear blade, particularly one for notching.
