By oxidation of p-tert-butyltoluene in the presence of acetic acid, a colourless p-tert-butylbenzoic acid can be obtained if the mixture used contains 0.2 to 2 % by weight of acetic acid, a limited amount of cobalt catalyst and less than 0.22 % by weight of bromine as a co-catalyst and the reaction mixture is diluted to 0.1 to at most 1 part by weight of water per part by weight of acetic acid to isolate the product. The recycling of mother liquors from isolation of the product to the oxidation at this point as a reaction medium is possible in a particularly advantageous manner without discoloration of the product.
