The invention relates to a process for coating plastics, in which, as primer, an aqueous dispersion is used which contains an aliphatic polyurethane containing reactive carboxyl groups, a polyacrylate, a pigment and optionally a curing agent. The invention comprises using, as coating to be applied to the primer coat, on the one hand an aqueous dispersion which likewise comprises an aliphatic polyurethane containing reactive carboxyl groups, a polyacrylate, optionally a pigment and optionally a curing agent, or which on the other hand, is a mixture of a hydroxyl-containing polymer as binder, an organic solvent, a pigment and a curing agent. Coatings of this type adhere well and do not attack the plastic under the primer coat by penetrating the latter.
