A reaper (12) has toes (22) to gather plants, like maize having ears, into an upwardly and rearwardly extending chute (14) having a longitudinal slot (16) to pass the stalks of the plants. The ears are transported along the chute by means of an auger (24). Underneath an upper rear end (37) of the slot, there is provided a rotary cutter (27) arranged to sever the ears from the stalks and to shop the stalks into pieces. The auger transports the ears further along the chute to a transverse barrel from where they are transported to a thresher.
