The pressure in the prim. circuit of a pressurized water nuclear reactor is controlled when the reactor is shut down by including a vapour/liq. pressuriser in the circuit. The circuit also has a vol. monitor branch circuit, contg. a charging pipe and valve; a discharge vale and vol. monitoring tank; plus a return pump loading to the first circuit. The valve is used to adjust the sprinkling of cold water into the pressuriser to cool the first circuit. When the water reaches the top part of the pressuriser, a constant flow into pipe is maintained; and a quick acting controller is used to adjust the discharge valve so that pressure in the first circuit can be controlled during cooling.
