[Also in Division E2] Apparatus for forming a plastics thread into a continuous row of sliding clasp fastener link members comprises a toothed wheel 1, a thread guide 8 which moves axially across the circumference of the wheel and radially at one or both sides of the wheel and an anvil at one or both sides of the wheel level with the base of the teeth 2 in wheel 1. The wheel 1 is shown in cross-section in Figs. 5 and 6 and from above in Fig. 2, the formed fastener being also shown in this figure. The thread guide has a raised portion 9 around the outlet of the thread channel 8 and a finger 11 which fits between two teeth 2 on wheel 1. In operation the thread guide 8 moves from left to right laying a thread 3 between the teeth 2. The thread guide is lowered radially so that finger 11 is located between teeth 2 and the raised portion 9 stamps the thread against the anvil 4 forming a thickened portion 3c. At the same time, the finger 11 presses the thread against the raised portion 5 between the teeth and forms another dent in the thread. The thread guide is then moved radially and moved to the left to the position shown in Fig. 6, the flattened portion 3c forming the fastener member. The toothed wheel is advanced by one tooth and the process is repeated yielding a fastener of the type shown in Fig. 2. The thread 3 may be softened by heating during the process. In an alternative embodiment, the wheel 1 comprises two toothed sections with a space between them and an anvil is placed on both sides of the wheel, the resulting link member having the cross-section of a prone figure eight. The depression formed by raised portion 5 assists in fastening the fastener to a stringer. |
