PURPOSE:To realize an optical AND circuit which is integrated on one substrate, by constituting the circuit in such a way that light of a prescribed mode can be propagated by means of a switching section when inputted optical signals occupy all two optical waveguides. CONSTITUTION:When optical signals exist in both optical waveguides 11 and 12, the voltage produced by an optical electromotive force element 21 becomes about twice the voltage produced when optical signals exist in either one of the waveguides 11 and 12. Therefore, the refractive index at a narrow-width section 14 is increased as compared with the case where optical signals exist either one of the waveguides 11 and 12, and the regulated width of the optical waveguide at the narrow-width section 14 approaches those of an optical input and output sections 13a and 13b and light of a single mode becomes to be propagated. Accordingly, the light of a single mode of the optical input section 13a is obtained at the optical output section 13b after passing through the narrow-width section 14. This can be applied to not only the AND operation of single mode lights, but also the AND operation of multi-mode light. |
