<p>2-methyl 6-oxo(3,4'-bipyridino) 5-carbo-nitrile of formula (I) is made by (a) reacting ethoxymethylene malonitrile (II) with 4-pyridinylmethyl methyl ketone (III) in an organic solvent, e.g. methanol, ethanol or isopropanol at between 50 deg. C and reflux temp. to give (I); (b) isolating this by chromatography or fractional crystallisation; and (c) recrystallising from DMF and water.</p> |
