A laser has an optical cavity defined by two reflecting members (1, 2) one at least of which is a grid polariser which has a parallel set of metallic strips on a transparent substrate and which transmits radiation polarised perpendicular to the strips and reflects the rest. A gain cell (4) containing a gaseous active medium is located within the optical cavity and is stimulated by a power source 5.
