PURPOSE:To measure the wear of a sliding face accurately and easily by providing a thin resistance layer in a part of a side face, which is vertical to the end face including a gap of a magnetic head body, near the end face and providing a pair of terminals at two points interposing the gap on this thin resistance layer. CONSTITUTION:When probes 8A and 8B of an ammeter 9 are brought into contact with terminals 7 and 7 and a voltage having a prescribed magnitude is applied from a power source 10, a certain current is flowed and its current value is detected by the ammeter if the end face of a head 2 is not worn at all. However, if the head 2 is worn up to the position indicated by a broken line A-A because of the use for a long time, the width of a thin film resistor 6 is reduced and the resistance is increased because the resistor 6 is worn together, and the current value indicated on the ammeter 9 is reduce. Thus, the wear state of the head is measured accurately, and recording and reproducing are performed by the head which is badly affected by wear if the head is replaced when the current value becomes lower than a prescribed value. |
